Members of Ballard’s Varsity Men’s Lacrosse Team went undefeated in the 7v7 Halloween Classic this past weekend at the Ohio State University in Columbus. Although an unofficial event sponsored by the NCAA Div. I Buckeyes, Ballard’s Varsity players made a strong showing for their first trip to Columbus, against teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Senior attackmen Paul Fischer and David Spielberg, along with sophomore Merrick Hicks, ran an aggressive offense that scored most games into double digits, supported by midfielders Buzz Hancock, Carrie Walker, Hunter Smith, and Daniel Clark. A strong defensive unit of Ty Unthank, John Haselden, with defensive midfielder Robbie LeJong, held most opponents to less than five goals, and made even those difficult and painful to come by. Senior Goalie Jeremy Stein faced hundreds of shots during the day, thanks to the shortened fields and fast-paced games, but stood strong in between the pipes. Thanks go out to all the parents that helped organize the event, and also to Ohio State Midfielder Brian Lalley for his encouragement and expertise during the tournament. The efforts of this select squad will go towards building a Bruin Lacrosse program that will be competitive with top teams in Louisville and the surrounding states in the spring season.
